Memphis The Musical

My amazing Mommy came to visit me last week and we went to see 2 wonderful Broadway Shows!!

First show we went to see was the 2010 Tony Winner for Best Musical!
I don't want to give too much away about this fantastic production so I may seem a tad bit vague.

The show opens with a fantastic scene in a Memphis dance club on "the other side of town". I wanted to start dancing the minute the curtain went up. The music is phenomenal! That old 1950s Memphis rock is just too cool for school folks! The dancing was really fun and they had some talented ensemble!

Anyhow, the story line of this show is a white DJ that wants to play black underground rock on the radio. And the usual story line goes from there... boy meets girls, society doesn't approve, careers on the rise... yada yada yada. I will not tell you anymore about the story because I want to you go WATCH the musical.

There were scenes that had me crying so hard that my make-up was being put to the test and according to my mother I laughed so loud the entire theater could hear me! Clearly I loved this show. I left thinking it was one of my favorite shows ever. Go see this show people!! It is AMAZING!!

Finding the Dress!!

Welcome to Wedding Wednesdays where I go on and on about my impeding nuptials and engagement bliss!!

Last week, my mother & TamTam came to town to do a little wedding dress shopping. We had appointments booked for Thursday, Friday & Saturday! The entire trip was planned around "the dress". However, there was OH SO MUCH FUN to be had in between the shopping experiences!

The ladies arrived on Wednesday and we met at their hotel. Mary & Lee Lee Poo Poo met up with us as well. (Leah was dancing in NYC for the past 2 weeks)
We headed to PJ Clark's Sidecar for dinner and met up with Miss Michelle & her Auntie. Of course I have no pictures of that because there was food involved and I was a pig! After dinner, I headed home to get my beauty sleep before my first big day of dress shopping!! The ladies may have stayed up chatting like school girls at night but I am a party pooper who goes to bed at 10pm.

So, Thursday rolls around and I took Mom & TamTam to City Bakery for a little nibble and coffee before we went to our first appointment. As we were walking to Klienfeld's Bridal, Mom spotted a Sephora and just had to stop. I am so so happy that she did! We were introduced to a new product called Pre-fekt
It made Mom's skin look air brushed. It was fabulous!!
Mom & TamTam were a blast in Sephora!!
Shop Shop Shop Shop Shop

After the make-up pit stop, we were off to our first appointment!! Klienfled's Bridal!!
I had a BLAST trying on dresses! A blast I say! So much fun in fact, I ended up saying "YES to the dress". Oh that's right... no more shopping! We found the dress at the first stop! I love my dress!! LOVE!! It's Ivory and Strapless and GORGEOUS!! That is all you get to know people!! (Don't worry Stud Muffin doesn't read the blog.)
So, needless to say, our plans for the week changed!! I felt horrible because I had invited Stud Muffin's Mother down to shop with us on Friday. So, Kleinfeld's was super gracious and allowed us to come back on Friday to try on the dress again!! And just so you know... I loved it more on Friday!!!

But... more on Thursday.
TamTam took her first NYC Subway Ride!!
Then we went to SoHo and had lunch at Balthazar! Mmmm.
And spent the evening watching a fantastic show... Memphis!!

Hold Me Closer T*** D****

My friend over at Hollywood Housewife is doing a celebrity story link up this Friday, so I decided to write about the one celebrity that makes me lose my head.

It was the summer of 2001, my first summer as a resident of New York City, and one of my best friends from Oklahoma came to visit. We had been planning this trip since the day I moved. Our favorite musician was playing a concert in Central Park and we just had to be there!
(Stole this image, think it is a DMB Concert, they all look the same though)

Now, you should know that when you have a ticket to a Central Park Concert that it is general admission. So... this means you wait in line ALL DAY before going in to find your perfect viewing position. Waiting in the park is not that bad. You can find shade or sun, bring a picnic and blanket and really make a day of it. And make a day of it we did!
We went pretty early to get a spot and just hung around the park all day. About half way through the day is when I lost my marbles... there he was roller blading through the park... shirtless.

TONY DANZA!!!

Yup, that's right! I am OBSESSED!! I LOVE HIM! You would have thought that Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise was roller blading by. I looked like a tween who had just seen that Twilight guy. No, seriously, I jumped up off my blanket and ran as fast as my feet could take me screaming his name. And trust me people, I would do it again because... he waved back at me!! Be still my heart! The crazy part is that I do NOT get star struck. I have worked with and met many a celebrity and I just don't find them to be different than me. Except for Tony Danza. LOVE!!!

As you can imagine, my friend and everyone else in line for the Ani Difranco Concert thought I was crazy. My friend will never let me live this moment down, as I embarrassed her and myself beyond belief. I could not control myself. Anyhow, we attended our concert and went to dinner after... all I could talk about was Tony Danza!!!
HOLD ME CLOSER TONY DANZA!!!

I cannot wait for this woman to get here!!

Upstate NY Weekend

Last weekend Stud Muffin and I went upstate NY to see his mother for the weekend. For those of you that do not know about upstate NY it is BEAUTIFUL!! I mean simply divine. When people think about NY they only think NYC but there is an entire world of wilderness and mountains north of this city.

Stud Muffin and I caught a ride with his cousin Friday night and headed up the NY State Thruway. It is always a pretty drive. When we arrive my future Mother In Law had wine, cheese and baked goods ready for us to chow down on! It was delightful. We stayed up til 2 in the morning just talking and catching up! That is WAY PAST MY BEDTIME!!

Saturday morning it rained and we stayed in the house having some coffee and homemade coffee cake! It was heaven and so relaxing. After the rain lifted Stud Muffin and I went on a walk around is old neighborhood.

Here is the creek that runs along the road and behind his mothers house.
More Creek.
We found all sorts of things growing...

When we got back to the house and were walking up the steps... I noticed that something moved under our feet. A SNAKE!!! I jumped (and I'm not kidding about my reaction) into my Stud Muffin's arms crying. Seriously. He thought it was funny and tried to put me down. This is NOT a laughing matter I tell you! I then sat on top of his mothers car until he carried me inside. I have no pics of the snake because I was too scared to move. BUT... Stud Muffin, my hero, got that shovel out and took that suckers head off!! Woooo!!

On Saturday evening we went to dinner with my Grandmothers cousin, Teddy, who lives upstate these days. It was delightful. He and Joan got along so well. Just two peas in a pod I say.

On Sunday, Stud Muffin got outside and did some yard work for his mother. While he was outside working I snapped pics of things I thought were cool in this old house.
First thing first... the fireplace in this house... is a bit creepy.
Notice anything scary?
Then I took some pics of the birds. I was too loud and moved to fast to get a good pic. Always scared them.
And then... a pic to show off Stud Muffin's amazing artist skills!! I love it!
He drew this for his mother one year at Christmas time. It is framed so there is a glare in the pic but you get the drift. He is Gooooood!

Stud Muffin built his Mom a fire place in her yard. Cannot wait to go back and sit by the fire.

How cute is this house in the woods?

Thanks for the fun weekend Joan!! We'll be back soon!!

UPDATE

UPDATE:  Just tried this with Turkey Bacon and it is GOOOOOOD!

This is NOT my recipe. I took it from the Pioneer Woman. Well, actually, I took it from my God-mother who took it from the Pioneer Woman. This is my attempt.

You only need 3 things!
Jalapeño, Cream Cheese & Bacon.
I used the lower in fat bacon and fat free cream cheese. I am sure it tastes better with the fat.

Oops: make that 4 things. Your gonna need some tooth picks too!

First thing first:  Wash those jalapeños & Pre-heat your oven to 375.
Next:  Slice them up.
Then take a spoon (or your finger but careful not to touch eyes after) to hallo them out.
I prefer to leave a few seeds in them for a little kick. However, if serving to a group I suggest cleaning them out real good! Wash em up again if you need to. :)

Next slice your bacon into thirds.

Then make yourself a pretty little assembly line

Next take a spoon and fill those jalapenos up with cream cheese!
Mmmmm... I say the more the better but it really doesn't matter how much you use!

Then wrap those bad boys in bacon. And stick a toothpick in them so the bacon stays on.
Now:  if you have seen these on the Pioneer Woman's site, she uses a cooking sheet with a rack on it. I don't have one so this will have to do. (I think the only difference is that I got bacon grease all over the bottom of my jalapeños!)

Anywho:  stick those hot jalapeños in the oven for 20 -25 minutes. (I went with 20 and it was fine)

Serve!

Oh so yummy!!! I need them again just posting this!!

But since I don't really eat much dairy my next attempt at these will be made with Soy Cream Cheese & Turkey Bacon. I promise to post that as well... Could be interesting :)

Who knew Jersey could be fun?

You may be looking for a post on Snooki & The Situation but you find that here. (Don't kid yourself, I watch the Jersey Shore though.) Just a simple post about how Stud Muffin and I spent 4th of July.

Originally we had planned to try and go see our future wedding site over the 4th but the plane tickets were just too pricey. So, we decided to stay in the city and just save some cash.

Then, a few days before the holiday Stud Muffin's cousin called to see if we would like to stay in her apartment in Weehawken for the weekend while she and her husband were out of town. They have a pool with a city view! I'm in!!You take a ferry from Manhattan to Weehawken and your there. So simple!

We spent the day by the pool.

Had to get all of my serious reading in while tanning. Then later that evening we watched the fireworks over the Hudson River. They were so gorgeous! Macy's always puts on an amazing show!! (Thanksgiving or 4th!)

The next day we headed back on the ferry to reality. Ho hum...

Tackling the Guest List!

Welcome to Wedding Wednesdays here at Dancing Through Life!
Todays topic: The guest list!!

I am a firm believer that every girl in this world falls into one of three categories as a child; 1. The girl who has her entire wedding planned out by age 7 and just needs to "insert Groom here", 2. The girl that thinks she will get married one day but never really thinks wedding until she has met "The One", and 3. The girl that thinks (or knows) she will never ever get married. Until July 2004, I put myself into the 3rd category. Not because I thought it was impossible to find a mate but because I was career driven and men got in the way. So, needless to say I am a bit behind the girls in category 1 who just need to "insert groom".

With all that said, I hear that the Guest List is a dreaded discussion and people fret over this part more than anything. I was not dreading it. Really? I LOVE making lists and this seemed right up my alley. Our initial guest list was easy and painless. (not according to Stud Muffin, but I thought it was)

Yesterday I typed out an Excel Sheet with names and addresses and things and BAM! the shock of who was missing came crashing down. The numbers started to double and then I felt myself having a panic attack. I just simply cannot afford to include everyone and I would hate for anyone to feel slighted. The other issue is that it is a destination wedding and I don't want anyone to feel obligated to use vacation days to see me get married. I think we have the guest list finished and ready to go but now I am losing sleep worried that I have forgot someone somehow.

Advice is welcome!

Picking the Perfect Venue

Welcome to Wedding Wednesdays! The one day a week I talk about my BIG DAY!
I am looking for all the advice I can get so please comment!!

The day after Stud Muffin proposed he did the sweetest thing in the world!
He gave me these for my beach reading!!!
He apparently didn't know what he had done! I went into full wedding mode! (Lucky for me, Stud Muffin is kinda into the whole process as well.) I couldn't get enough!!
While I was totally clueless to the fact that I was going to get engaged, we had discussed what we would like to do for a wedding many times. I knew I wanted to be a beach bride and I knew that the Florida Keys were the place. Now, we just needed to find "the place".
We had two thoughts about this. One, Key Largo:  this is where I spent all my spring breaks as a child and brought Stud Muffin to meet my Gege for the first time. Our 2nd option was Key West:  This was a stop on our first vacation together and the place where we were engaged. Both places had sentimental value and both places seemed like great fun!!
Before I continue I would like to say that I have one real piece of criteria for my wedding:  Everyone must have fun!! Other than that... not too concerned about much.
So... we thought we would get information on the place we were engaged as a possible wedding location.

Sunset Key:  While pretty and extremely fun... WAY TOO EXPENSIVE!! $65,000 to rent the place out! (Please be advised that during these posts I will make numerous references to how everything costs too much. This is not to offend anyone who spent hundreds of thousands on their wedding, its just not me. Or remotely practical for me. + I was raised by someone who wants to cook burgers in the back yard... & no, I am not referring to Steve Martin in Father of the Bride.) $65, 000 could be a down payment on a house. It could feed so many people. Did I mention that they weren't even going to comp our room the night of the wedding? This was a NO NO NO. But at least we checked because I would have always wondered.

This is where I really thought I would be married. We walked in and I saw this aisle!!
This would be a GRAND entrance I thought and could actually see myself getting married! I was really really excited. We didn't call to make an appointment with the planner we just thought we would stop by and check it out. The planner wasn't in, so we grabbed a brochure and had a drink at the pool bar. While having my drink I pretty much planned out what everything would look like.
The next week my mother went to Casa Marina with my Aunt and Gege to meet with the planner. He said I couldn't use the walk way! Why? Because they won't block it for the 20 seconds it takes me to walk down it. He said they did it before and people walked through the Brides Entrance!! WHAT??? Really?? Craziness I tell you! This news did not make me think that I would count it out. Then came the... You can have the date you want but we do have a pirate convention that weekend so you will not be the only event. Hmm... maybe not. What about another weekend? Well, sure! In 2012!!!! Ooooooooookay.... NEXT!

We moved up the Keys to Islamorada, FL and checked out what I thought would definitely be the winner. Morada Bay Cafe! I love this restaurant and it has the prettiest beach in the Keys in my opinion.
We met with the planner and there was a rather large site fee of $10,000. This included... the beach. Oh, and a few chairs and the normal restaurant tables that have no table cloths. At first I thought it would work but then when we went back with Mom in tow... those plans were gone. This is when I learned that My Mother knows much more about planning my wedding than I do. I had no idea what questions to ask or how to say no to things. Like always, I need my Mommy.

With my favorite Key West location out and my favorite Key Largo (ish) location out, I was very discouraged. Stud Muffin was pushing for Key West because he thought that in the "down time" his friends would have more fun and those that were planning to stay for a week long vacation wouldn't have to drive from one Key to the other. My parents really wanted it in Key Largo as it was sentimental to them. I really wanted everyone to stop looking at me and saying that it was "my choice... BUT". What I wanted was for someone else to make the decision and be the one to disappoint someone. I want to have a fun wedding and not worry about if it is sentimental to one group or more convenient for another group's vacation. Did I mention that everything looked too pricey? I just wanted to cry. I had been engaged a whole week and was OVER IT!
We checked out a place in Key Largo and as we entered Stud Muffin announces "I Hate IT!", we were still in the parking garage. Awesome! This is gonna be so freakin awesome! We checked out another place in Key Largo and he liked it a bit better. He still liked Key West the best (as did I) but said if this was more affordable it would be acceptable.
I came home from our Keys vacation very excited about being engaged but with a bad taste in my mouth about the process that was beginning. All I could think was that I was never gonna get a date I wanted in a place that everyone wanted. I can't please everyone.
Mom and Dad called and BINGO!!! They went and checked out a place that we kept overlooking assuming that it would be too expensive. Dad loved it, Mom loved it, my Gege loved it!! It was affordable and gorgeous! Stud Muffin and I have yet to see it but we trust my Mommy. They had a date on one of the weekends I wanted and it was the cheaper of the 2 weekends I had picked. Stud Muffin and I are super excited and I cannot wait to go take my own tour of Cheeca Lodge in July!!

Moral to this story... Just let Mom do it!

And They'll Be Dancin'.... Yeah!

As many of you know, I am obsessed with my dance kids! I cannot get enough!

I went back to Oklahoma June 15-17 and did a little Summer Workshop that was quite possibly more fun for me than work. Miss Michelle, Miss Annie and I began classes at 9am and finished about 4:30pm! I learned a BIG lesson while teaching this week as well... those 1st graders will wear you out! I was exhausted by 11 o'clock in the morning!! We did some fun things during the week...
My 1st & 2nd graders got some cool sunglasses to wear in class...
Their helpers (Katelyn & Spencer) may have liked the prizes more! Landy didn't want the boy glasses I brought him so he went without but still danced like a champ!

The kids were great and I wish that we would have danced for all 5 days during the week... maybe next summer! Here is a little video I made for my own use but thought you all might enjoy it as well!

Happy Birthday Jessie!!!

Today is one of my very best friends birthdays!! Happy Birthday Miss Jessie!!
I really wanted to post some fabulous pictures of us from long ago as the "Twins of Hollywood" but I cannot get my scanner to work! :(

So instead, here is a pic from our Pre-Graduation Party May 1999.
Let's see... From left to right we have Summer, Jessie, Me, Thomas, Meghann, Bridger, Courtney & Erin. We all thought we were so cute in those Harold's clothes. Eh...

Jessie went to TCU and I went to OU but have no fear... we are sisters for life though Kappa Kappa Gamma!

Here is a pic of us from a trip she took to NYC with her sister-in law, Holly.

Mmmmm.... We cannot eat like this anymore!

Happy Birthday Jess! I love you~~~
